Another Country- Aspects of Scottish Migration
Another Country- Aspects of Scottish Migration
March 12, 2018 – June 3, 2018
Alice R. Rogers Gallery & Target Gallery, SJU
Artists:
Irineu Destourelles, Graham Fagen, Dawn Gavin, Andrew Gilbert, Euan Gray, Richard Guzman, Andrew Hairstans, Dana Hargrove, Birthe Jorgensen, Katherine Ka Yi Liu, Elaine Rutherford and Alberta Whittle
Migration affects everybody either directly or indirectly. In Minnesota, there are 428,000 foreign-born residents, 8% of the population.
This exhibition brings together twelve artists from distinct, ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds, all born or currently living in Scotland. It assesses the historical and, at times negative, impact of Scottish colonialism on the United States, while at the same time tackling issues with contemporary migration, a complex subject with rapidly growing relevance in the current political climate. The work presented is personal as most of the artists are migrants themselves.
Referencing the title of James Baldwin’s 1962 novel of the same name, the exhibition highlights that for each individual living in the same city, America can become ‘another country’, depending on one’s ethnicity, status and situation.
Prejudice against migrants has been in place for generations and our aim with the project is to highlight that migration is an ancient phenomenon that has not always been welcomed but has enabled significant benefits for countries that eventually become home.
The exhibition does not aim to instruct the visitor but rather encourage a discussion. Through a series of events and seminars it provides an opportunity for sustainable dialogue with migrants, artists, students and academics that will lead to new insights into community building and integration.
The project is co-curated by Euan Gray, Elaine Rutherford and Alberta Whittle.

Geoform Artist Profile
Dana Hargrove is now participating in the curatorial project Geoform.net.
Geoform is an online scholarly resource and curatorial project whose focus is the use of geometric form and structure in contemporary abstract art being made by artists from around the world.
Geoform explores, documents and celebrates the rich diversity of style and aesthetic intent that characterizes this broad vein of contemporary non-objective abstraction. Such diversity attests to the profound resonance that geometric form and structure have had for people across time and place.
Geoform is edited by Julie Karabenick (juliekarabenick.com). It has been online since May, 2005.

Recent Press- Orlando Weekly interview & blogs
An article written by Esteban Meneses features in the August 26th edition of the Orlando Weekly. Get it in print form around Orlando, or read it here at www.orlandoweekly.com.
“Imagine a stately wall mounted inside the Orlando Museum of Art. As you approach what seems like a deliberate barrier to the 2017 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art exhibit, constructed from boxes stacked on top of one another, you look closer and notice the patterns that mark the contours of the boxes. Along the wall – a 10-by-24-foot bulwark – the boxes appear to bulge forward and sideways in an asymmetric Tetris-like arrangement.”
Also some recent blogosphere press:
Here at https://theculturetrip.com/
“Hargrove urges a connection of mindfulness between a person’s surroundings and the effect on not only the individual but also society.”
And at http://designcrushblog.com/
“Dana Hargrove’s pieces are acrylic paint on wood, but you might think some of them are stacks of colorful blocks…”

Group Exhibition in Iceland- Press Release
Group exhibition ‘Precipice’ at Deiglan, Akureyri, Iceland, curated by Dana Hargrove
14:00 – 17:00, May 13th & 14th, 2017
Deiglan, Listagil , Art Street, Kaupvangsstræti 23, Akureyri, Iceland
Artists Dana Hargrove, Dawn Roe and Rachel Simmons and geographer Lee Lines announce a group exhibition titled:
PRECIPICE
….
The USA-based artists and collaborators of the group exhibition Precipice have created an exhibition that uses the Icelandic landscape as a vehicle, or jumping off point (precipice) to prompt thoughtful deliberation on universal concerns. Each artist has allowed Iceland’s landscape to infiltrate into the content of their art practice while conducting fieldwork or participating in Icelandic artist residencies. The works, of varying mediums and theoretical approach, promote multi-faceted interpretations, yet often cross paths in areas concerning memory, perception, representation, consumerism, climate change, and sustainability.
The installation format, including the use of wall text, encourages broader conversation regarding our perceptions of landscape as a natural, cultural, and politicized entity. The artists wish to serve as alt rogue ambassadors (#altgov) for the USA, among the many in opposition to the current Trump administration’s attack on science and intellectualism, which unless resisted could very well jeopardize life on this beautiful planet.

New work- Local Exhibition
New work by Dana Hargrove is now on view at Winter Park’s New General through a curated project with Ginger Duggan of Curator Squared.
The first thing you may notice about Dana Hargrove’s exhibition for New General is a deliberate layering—seen literally in the installation itself, where multiple pieces comprise the larger whole; and within the work itself, where shapes are stacked one on top of the other, forming intricate networks. While Hargrove employs a wide range of media, most of her work deals with systems within nature and how we as humans exist within and/or interact with these environments. At times, they are more literal (as in her storefront collages) and other examples are abstracted representations of space and place.
The “cairn” watercolors, while originally inspired by stacks of rocks in her native Scotland, are not tied to that specific place. Instead, they become studies of shape, color and abstraction that trigger different interpretations for everyone. The same symbolic stacks take on far different realizations in the cardboard formations that Hargrove creates and then photographs in different settings. Here the work is multi-layered as well: the original stacked cardboard sculpture is the work of art, the performative act of incorporating into different spaces is a work of art, as is the resulting photograph of the action. Perhaps the final layer is where and how each of us interact with the installation.

2016 Rollins Faculty Exhibition at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum
CORNELL FINE ARTS MUSEUM ANNOUNCES FACULTY EXHIBITION
Presenting recent works by artists and art professors Joshua Almond, Rose Thome Casterline, Dana Hargrove, Dawn Roe, and Rachel Simmons.
Winter Park, FL (April 6, 2016) – On view from April 16-May 15, 2016, the 2016 Rollins Faculty Exhibition at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum (CFAM) at Rollins College offers an opportunity to share new or recent work by five innovative artists with both the campus community and the greater Orlando area. Beyond their dedication to teaching at Rollins, the featured artists, Joshua Almond, Rose Thome Casterline, Dana Hargrove, Dawn Roe, and Rachel Simmons maintain busy studio practices and exhibit their work both regionally and nationally. “Composed of works shown here for the first time, the exhibition sheds light on new bodies of work and ongoing explorations for the artists’ robust practices,” states Ena Heller, director of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum.
Dana Hargrove uses her distinctive abstract language in new ways in a series of free-standing sculptures presented in the exhibition. Her forms, often made in loose-reference to cairns, stone mounds in her native Scotland, play with notions of reality and constructed facades as the backing of some of the pieces evoke the presentation style of the iconic Hollywood sign.
