Inspired by travels within the USA, as well as further afield in my home country of Scotland and a recent trip to China’s Shanghai and Beijing, through airports, highways, metropolitan areas and the local commercial districts that make up these urban environments, I aim to highlight the beautiful unification of space that maintains a façade of controlled seemlessness that belies any difficulties or tension.
Familiar landscapes mediated by culture become starting points for many of the works within ‘Inhabit’. How we inhabit our world and manufacture that world to fit corporatized molds is an idea that has preoccupied me as an artist.
Synthetic terrain has become coded in our cultured nature through organized manmade systems that frame perception and encourage our sophisticated removal into abstraction; an abstraction that wavers slightly as cracks reveal a new reality, a reality that isn’t so slick.
